Each collection is designed around a specific condition — closures, openings, and fit chosen for what your body actually needs right now.

What is adaptive clothing?

Adaptive clothing is specially designed clothing with modified fastenings, openings, and construction that make dressing easier for people with physical limitations. Instead of buttons, zips, and overhead necklines, adaptive garments use velcro closures, side openings, and elastic waistbands that can be managed with limited mobility, grip strength, or range of motion. In India, adaptive clothing is recommended by surgeons, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists for post-surgery recovery, elderly care, and chronic conditions such as arthritis and Parkinson's disease.

Surgery patients

After knee, hip, shoulder, spine, or mastectomy surgery, standard clothing can cause pain or violate your surgeon's movement restrictions. Each condition page explains exactly what clothing is safe and why.

Elderly and those with chronic conditions

Arthritis, Parkinson's, and dementia affect grip strength and coordination. Velcro and side-opening adaptive clothing reduces dressing time from 30 minutes to under 5, and preserves independence longer.

Frequently asked questions

What is adaptive clothing and how is it different from regular clothing?

Adaptive clothing is designed with modified closures, openings, and construction for people who find standard dressing difficult due to surgery, disability, or age. Key differences: velcro instead of buttons and zips, side or front openings instead of overhead neck holes, and elastic or open waistbands instead of fitted trouser bands. The garments look like normal everyday clothing from the outside.

Is adaptive clothing available in India?

Yes. Aasra is India's dedicated adaptive clothing brand. All products are made in India, sized for Indian body types, and ship across India with free delivery, cash on delivery, and 7-day returns. Each garment is available in sizes S to 3XL.

What size should I order for a post-surgery patient?

Order the patient's normal clothing size. Post-surgery swelling is normal, but our adaptive garments use velcro closures that adjust to fit even when the body is swollen. If you are between sizes, go one size larger. Side-opening garments are especially forgiving of swelling because they open fully before being positioned on the body.

How long will someone need adaptive clothing after surgery?

It depends on the surgery. Knee and hip replacement patients typically need adaptive clothing for 6–12 weeks while movement restrictions are in place. Shoulder surgery patients need it for 6–12 weeks while the arm cannot be raised above shoulder height. Mastectomy and C-section patients typically need it for 4–6 weeks. Each condition page has a detailed recovery timeline.

Does adaptive clothing look like normal clothing?

Yes. Aasra adaptive clothing is designed to look identical to regular T-shirts, kurtas, pyjamas, and shorts. The velcro closures and side openings are not visible when the garment is worn. This matters for dignity, especially for elderly patients and those going out during recovery.

Can adaptive clothing be machine washed?

Yes. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. Close all velcro tabs before washing to prevent them catching on other fabric. Air dry or tumble dry on low. The velcro bond remains strong after repeated washing. 100% cotton fabric is soft, breathable, and does not shrink significantly at low temperatures.
